History of the Maldives: The Maldives has a history dating back approximately 2,000 years, when people who emigrated from Sri Lanka and southern India, initially influenced by Buddhism, converted to Islam in 1153. Through the centuries, the country has experienced periods of Portuguese influence , Dutch and British, finally becoming a sovereign state on 26 July 1965.
