Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, located about 90 km from Colombo, is a unique and heartwarming attraction dedicated to the care and conservation of orphaned and injured elephants. Established in 1975, the facility is home to one of the largest captive elephant herds in the world, offering visitors a chance to observe these majestic animals up close. Travelers can watch elephants being fed and enjoy the charming sight of baby elephants being bottle-fed. A highlight of the visit is the daily river bathing session, where the herd is led to the nearby river to play and cool off—a perfect photo opportunity. Pinnawala also aims to promote education and awareness about elephant conservation. It’s an ideal destination for families, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone looking to experience the beauty and majesty of Sri Lanka’s gentle giants.
