Sigiriya

Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks, located in the central Matale District, about 175 km from Colombo. Also known as the Lion Rock, it is an ancient fortress and palace complex built atop a towering 200-meter rock by King Kashyapa in the 5th century CE. Travelers can climb the rock via a series of staircases, passing highlights such as the Mirror Wall, adorned with ancient graffiti, and the famous Sigiriya Frescoes, depicting celestial maidens. At the summit, visitors are rewarded with the ruins of the king’s palace and breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The base of the rock features water gardens, moats, and terraces, showcasing advanced ancient engineering. Sigiriya’s blend of history, art, and nature makes it a must-visit destination for culture and adventure enthusiasts.
